About Parkinson's
Parkinson's is a slowly progressive neurological condition which occurs when insufficient quantities of the chemical Dopamine are produced in the brain. This results in key neurological symptoms - changes in movement, balance and coordination.
One in every 500 people in New Zealand has Parkinson's.

Parkinson's New Zealand is the only organisation dedicated to working for people with Parkinson's, their spouses, carers, whanau and health professionals.

Bay of Plenty Division
Our division covers the area from Waihi Beach to East Cape in the Bay of Plenty. We provide support for people with Parkinson's, their spouses, carers and whanau including:

  • Home visits
  • Assisting people to access services to which they are entitled
  • Total mobility assessment
  • Education, support, encouragement

Regular meetings and support groups
The Bay of Plenty division holds regular meetings and support groups. Please contact the division for further details.

  • Support Meetings in Tauranga & Whakatane (monthly)
  • Support Meetings in Katikati (quarterly)
  • Exercise Classes in Tauranga and Te Puke (weekly)
  • Carers only meetings in Tauranga (fortnightly)
  • Parkinsonian only meetings in Tauranga (quarterly)

As well as regular meetings, we offer social activites, seminars and a speech group.
The Field Officers are also available to speak to groups and service organisations to inform and raise the awareness of Parkinsons's.
