Hauora Taranaki PHO (HTPHO) was established in April 2003 as a limited liability company with not for profit status. Taranaki Primary Health Provider Inc. and Tui Ora Trust are the owners of HTPHO. Taranaki Primary Health Provider Inc.is a network of 18 General Practioners geographically spread throughout Taranaki. Tui Ora Trust is owned by Te Where Punanga Korero, representing each of the eight iwi, and Kia Kotahi Matou Inc. representing the eighteen Maori providers.
What is primary healthcare?
Primary healthcare is what you recieve when you visit your family Doctor (GP's) practise nurse or other community health professional such as Maori health workers, health promotion workers, dentists, dieticians, pharmacies, physiotherapists, psychologists and midwifes. Your primary health care provider is generally your first point of call for medical treatment. When you are referred to a hospital or specialist this is called secondary care.
Primary Healthcare strategy
In 2001, the Governent released the Primary Healthcare Strategy. Central to this was the creation of Primary Health Organisations (PHO's) which are designed to deliver primary healthcare services to the community through GP's and other healthcare professionals that are afflilated to the PHO.
PHO's get a set amount of funding from the Governement to subsidise a range of health servcies. The funding is based on the numbers and characteristics of the people enrolled with the PHO, for example, age, sex enthnicity etc.

Enrollment in a PHO is voluntary, but people are encouraged to join in order to gain the benefits associated with belonging to a PHO.
If you're not enrolled in a PHO, ask the receptionist at your your regular doctor.
