5. To encourage informed contributions in discussion of public issues and values

What we do:

The Bishop’s Action Foundation provides a range of programmes and undertakes social research in line with our objectives.  Examples of our work include:

A. Capacity building

We provide capacity building support to voluntary and community organisations through our Keystone Taranaki Programme.  Our services include a capacity building training programme, peer support, access to experienced mentors, specialist ICT advice and support (through the Keystone Taranaki ICT Gateway) and the provision of resources.

B. Community Development Training

A partnership between Auckland University of Technology and the Bishop’s Action Foundation has enabled the development of a new training programme on community development which is delivered in Taranaki.  The course focuses on the following areas:
• Community Action Planning
• Building Sustainable Communities
• Creating Capacity for Community Developments

C. Parenting and Families

• The Foundation is working to provide leadership around parenting and the place of families within society.  Our work includes a parenting support programme  and other projects that address unmet needs and better support families and parenting within Taranaki.

D. Seasons Programme

This programme is a peer support programme for young people aged 5-12 who are suffering grief and loss through one of the following factors: (a) death or life threatening illness of a parent or close relative; (2) separation/divorce of parents; (c) Long-term imprisonment of a parent or close family member; (4) Long-term placement with foster parents or (e) another qualifying circumstance.

E. Positive Ageing and Aged Care

Our work in this area focuses on tackling social isolation and exploring the lived experience of older people in rural areas.  We are developing a range of innovative service delivery options that will support older people to age positively and avoid social isolation.
