St John Caring Caller was established in 1996 and is a free telephone friendship service. The callers are often referred to as tele-friends and communicate by phone and on a first name basis to ensure confidentiality.
Caring Callers are sensitive and trained St John volunteers who make a friendly phone call at an agreed frequency (often daily) to chat and check on the wellbeing of the Caring Caller client.
Clients are often elderly people or those who are house bound. When someone asks to have contact from a Caring Caller they are matched with a suitable tele-friend by St John.
Studies have shown that 40% of older people will at some time experience significant loneliness, often through the loss of a partner or the isolation that comes from declining health and independence.
