The Returned and Services Association was formed in 1916 to provide for the welfare and well being of military personnel returning from World War I. Since then it has assisted many thousands of New Zealanders who have served in the Forces. One of the RSA’s major responsibilities is to ensure that all ex-servicemen and women receive the pensions and other benefits to which they, or their dependants, are entitled.
It has also provided welfare assistance to veterans and ex-Service personnel and their immediate families covering anything from spectacles and dentures to heat pumps and help towards the cost of motorised mobility scooters or minor elective surgery, for example cataract surgery. This funding comes from Poppy Day collections in the local community and from bequests, donations and commercial linkages at the national level.
Local RSA Pensions & Welfare Officers visit veterans in their own homes and in hospitals to ensure that social contacts are maintained and to see whether the veteran or their immediate family need any assistance. If an application for a War Disablement Pension or Surviving Spouse Pension is required the Pensions & Welfare Officer will be able to assist with the completion of the application form and help the veteran obtain the supporting paperwork needed to get the claim ready to go to Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand. The RSA is also able to provide advocacy where needed.
Local RSAs around the country provide a safe and welcoming environment for all who have served in the Forces of New Zealand and Commonwealth and other Allied Nations. Members of the public who support the aims and objectives of the RSA are also welcome to become members and take full part in the events of their local RSA. Many local RSAs also have a Women’s Section which provides social events and outings for the wives, partners and widows of veterans.
